Dear Doris. I do miss you. We did have some laughs together especially when I was doing your hair for you. To layer your hair or not to layer your hair, that was the question. I wanted it layered but you were not for turning, you just wanted a little bit off! You didn’t like too much hair spray in case I sprayed it on the photos on the walls. You always said it looked nice, but I know that as soon as I left you pushed it all back and messed up my skilful hairdressing! We had many happy times sitting in your garden, having a drink together. Your garden was always so colourful and your roses were especially beautiful. I used to wind you up and tease you about things and you would tell me off, after a wine or two! You were so kind to me and so caring when I was going through the worst time of my life and you helped me through some very tragic and traumatic times. I will never forget your kindness Doris. I enjoyed the evenings we had together, when Peggy and I would cook you a meal and you sat in the dining room worrying that we were clattering around and breaking your Denby! As if we would! Doris was a very kind and dignified lady with many interesting stories to tell; 'Cycling home on gin' being my favourite. She was widowed so young but Sam had gifted her three children who would care for her and do it so well and with so much love. In this they were joined by the grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Everyone contributed to make her life the best they could and to help her visit places which rekindled fond memories. She was a very lucky lady and all her family must be very proud when they say 'bye for now'.

I have many fond memories of Doris, walking around and talking about the plants in her beautiful garden , always so full of colour. Driving off for a pub lunch somewhere or just sitting at home with her feeding the blackbird...or the fox ! Then putting the world to rights over a cup of tea. She will be sadly missed x

I have many happy memories of you, Doris. You were always so kind to me when I was younger and as I was growing up. It was a pleasure to know you. I feel very sad that I can't drop off a Christmas present to you this year or pop in for a glass of wine with my Mum. My overriding memories are the fun we all had at the many Veda Road parties and gatherings - be it birthdays, anniversaries, New Year's Eve, or those times when no excuse was needed for a good knees up! My friends all remember you fondly too from meeting you at those parties. I also remember chatting and laughing with you over the years when I would meet you walking up or down the hill in Ladywell. We only had the pleasure of meeting Doris once when she came with Lynn and Mark to stay overnight on their way to the Isle of Wight to see her brother. As Lynn knows we often talk about that day and we are so pleased that we had the opportunity to meet Doris.

Mum always welcomed our dogs to her house and didn't mind them settling down for a cosy nap on the sofa. More recently she enjoyed seeing Paddy when he came to visit at St Peters - often laughing at the way his scruffy hair around his eyes made it look like he was wearing specs!

Doris, you were a very dear friend and neighbour for so many years. I have so many happy memories of you. We enjoyed each others company. You were always welcoming and liked to sit and chat, gossip and put the world to rights over a glass of good red wine. Even when you were not up to it, you always insisted on going to the shops to get some 'nibbles' for our evenings. You were rightly so very proud of your family and kept me up to date with all their news. You always looked smart, everyone remarked on it, even when just going to pick up your newspaper, you dressed so well. I can picture you standing chatting on Vicars Hill with your paper tucked under your arm and you asking me to wait and walk back to your house with you. We had so many great evenings. You came to so many parties at our house, always sociable and people looked forward to you being there. You came to Bulgaria with us and other neighbours for my son's wedding and you danced the night away at the reception. Doris, I will miss you so much, I have many, many memories of being with you. John and I will say goodnight now Doris. Rest in peace. Peggy and John

"I can say with all honesty that your Mum was a very kind person; I remember how even sometimes when she was not well she would trawl the shops to find suitable Christmas presents for so many people, even when we told her we needed nothing and not to put herself through all of that. She bought so many gifts for me which I can actually remember, and still have some now. It is not only the object itself but also the caring she put into buying them that will remain attached to each one.
